About Navigator North

Navigator North are a Tees Valley based, artist led organisation who initiate, facilitate and promote opportunities to raise the profile of artists and support creative practice in the North East – inspiring visual artists and creative communities to thrive. We do this through providing studio/creative spaces in the area, delivering cultural programmes, public art commissioning and place-making initiatives.

Creative spaces & artist studios – Working with our spaces partner East Street Arts since 2011, we have provided hundreds of artists with studio space across 20 different sites in Tees Valley and County Durham in alternative meanwhile spaces, including office, retail and commercial properties.

Professional development & artist support – As an artist led organisation we pride ourselves on creating opportunities to support creative practice and professionalism within the creative sector.

Public exhibitions, events & activities – Curated to specific themes, our funded programmes aim to provide better understanding, access and engagement with the arts for the benefit of the public whilst enabling artists to share their work through public commissions, exhibitions, events and residencies.

Public art commissioning – Working in partnership with local authorities, property owners, funders and community stakeholders, we devise and deliver public art commissioning and place-making initiatives, through –

  • Co-creation with communities and meaningful community engagement programmes
  • Collaboration with businesses and stakeholders
  • Co-commissioning of artworks
  • Regional vision and strategies

Established in 2010 as a Community Interest Company, we are currently directed by arts professional and artist Vicky Holbrough and arts professional and curator James Lowther. The wider team includes project associates, place making consultants, researchers, designers and artists.
