The Masham Hotel
Navigator North’s Creative Space, The Masham on Linthorpe Road is in Middlesbrough town centre. It was intially conceived as the High Street Project Space for the HSHAZ cultural programme as place to connect and engage with communities and visitors in Middlesbrough.
Exhibitions and events have supported the creative community in Middlesbrough and invited the public in to find out more about Middlesbrough HSHAZ and take part in activities. These included artist and heritage talks, pop-up events, workshops and exhibitions.
This building, its architectural interest (Grade 2 listed frontage) and social history (as a former public house) act as a ’Winter Garden’ for Middlesbrough High Street in the 21st Century – creating a programme resource to connect culture, heritage and communities. Find out more about Navigator North’s previous work around the Middlesbrough Winter Garden here.
The Masham is a safe, informal, welcoming social space for people visiting the High Street where people can share memories, stories and histories.
This is an amazing project. We must repurpose our High Streets and bringing culture to the High Street will breathe new life into the area. Can’t wait to come back!
It’s lovely to see a disused space being used for art and a gathering of people rather than standing derelict.
Wonderful to see this building open again, and being an arts space is the best possible use. It looks fantastic!
Love this exhibition and find it so encouraging that such a space exists in the town centre. Hope your lease and future continues as a vital culture space.
Great thinking space with many interesting stories that have helped me understand better the rich cultural background of Middlesbrough.
