Amy Davies, Zetland Road Artist in Residence led by Navigator North responded to the hidden histories, people and stories associated with Zetland Road, which has some of Middlesbrough’s most historically significant buildings on it. These include Middlesbrough Railway Station, Webb House (designed by Philip Webb of the Arts & Crafts Movement) and The Zetland Hotel.
A programme of community engagement activities were delivered in May 2022, as part of Middlesbrough Local History Month. This residency included bespoke artist support including, access for artists training, critical writing and mentoring.
The ‘Zetland’ exhibition took place at The Masham between July 2022 and September 2022 and closed as an end point for the residency as part of Middlesbrough Art Weekender.
The work included the creation and use of a ‘Zetland Ink’ which Amy developed as part of the residency to create a series of large-scale abstract drawings based around people’s experiences of navigating heritage spaces.
Amy Davies is an artist who works primarily with drawing as a means to explore and understand space and the structures we live within; physical, social, imagined and concrete.
